LEGACY GIVING

Are you considering leaving a legacy to the Errington & District Volunteer Fire Department? There are a variety of ways you can make a bequest. A list of some examples of such planning options are provided below. Donors are strongly encouraged to consult with a legal and or financial professional advisors before finalizing a bequest. As a volunteer organization committed to working for and supporting our community, the EVFDis grateful for your consideration.

Leave a Gift in Your Will

You can make a gift of cash or property by including the EVFD as a beneficiary in your Will. In doing so, you have the options of including the EVFD as the beneficiary of a residual bequest, a specific bequest or contingent bequest. Individuals have legal obligations to make provision for particular individuals from their estate so again, customized legal advice is required and these provisions are provided for consideration and general reference only.

Residual bequest

A residual bequest is applicable if you wish to leave a portion or share of the residue of your estate to the EVFD after all debts and specific bequests to your family and loved ones are paid. Example: “I give to the Errington & District Volunteer Fire Department, Charitable Registration Number: 89XXX XXX0 BC 0001, ___% of the residue of my estate.”

Specific Bequest

A specific bequest is applicable if you wish to leave a gift for a specified amount to the EVFD.

Example:
I give the Errington & District Volunteer Fire Department, Charitable Registration Number: 89506 4780 BC 0001, $_________, without interest.”

Example:
“I give the Errington & District Volunteer Fire Department, Charitable Registration Number: 89506 4780 BC 0001, [legal description of the property/asset _______].”

Contingent bequest

A contingent bequest is applicable if you wish to leave a residual or specific bequest from your estate to the EVFD only if another beneficiary in your Will predeceases you. Example: “If [beneficiary name] does not survive me, I give [that individual’s share] to the Errington & District Volunteer Fire Department, Charitable Registration Number: 89506 4780 BC 0001.”

TFSAs, RRSPS and RRIFS

Gifts of a TFSA, RRSP or RRIF may be a tax-savvy and efficient way to leave these assets in support of the EVFD. By naming the EVFD as a successor holder or designated beneficiary of a registered plan, you may receive a tax receipt for the value of the plan, avoid probate fees by removing these assets from your estate and reduce estate taxes. Again, specific legal and financial advice is required in doing so. Gifts of Securities You can support the EVFD by donating publicly listed securities (stocks, bonds and mutual funds). If you have a broker you can ask them to initiate the transfer. Please also seek tax advice, but generally Canadians who donate appreciated securities to a registered charity eliminate capital gains tax on the investment.

Inter Vivos Gift of Cash or Property

You may choose to make a gift of cash or property to the EVFD any time while you are living. Please contact us at 250-248-5601 for further information on the applicable steps for doing so. Again, legal and financial advice is required when planning the above noted gifts, and your consideration is gratefully appreciated.
